Turists visiting Auroville and the Matrimandir, a space dedicated to the meditation, India 2019.
Auroville is an experimental township in the state of Tamil Nadu, in South India. It was founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa (known as “the Mother”) and designed by architect Roger Anger. The entire area was a red earth desert. Thanks to soil regeneration techniques and water systems the land is now a forest. Auroville has 3.000 residents from 54 countries with two-thirds from India, France and Germany. The city is in constant experimentation regarding the ralation between people and nature, and is developing multiple projects regarding organic and regenerative agricolture, bio- constructions and productions of goods that are integrated with the environment.
“Auroville wants to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville is to realize human unity.” — Mirra Alfassa
